A clever solution for our growing family: how storage space helped us
When Mark and Sophie found out they were expecting their second child, their joy was immense. Their cosy apartment in Rotterdam had always been more than enough for them and their first daughter, Emma. But with a second on the way, it soon became clear that space would be tight. Moving seemed the most obvious solution, but in today’s housing market, rising house prices and additional costs were simply unappealing. Therefore, they decided to reconfigure their apartment by converting the small study into an extra bedroom.
The search for extra space
Mark and Sophie set out to find a way to free up space without their home becoming cluttered. They needed somewhere to store their desk, bookcase and other work items but didn’t want to sell them, as they might still come in useful. When a friend suggested renting storage space at Eurobox Self Storage, they began exploring the options.
After a visit to the Rotterdam branch, they were convinced. By renting a storage unit, they could clear out their study and convert it into a fully-fledged nursery. Items not needed for the time being—such as the bookcase, desk and various boxes of paperwork—could be stored safely. This gave them the flexibility to redecorate their apartment without drastic measures.
What appealed to them most was the flexibility. At Eurobox they could choose from different unit sizes and switch to a larger or smaller space at any time, depending on their needs. The costs were very reasonable, especially compared with the mortgage payments on a larger home or the investment required for an internal renovation. Another important factor for Mark and Sophie was the veiligheid of their belongings. They felt reassured by the presence of CCTV, access control systems and intruder alarms. Because they can access their unit at any time, they can collect or drop off items whenever it suits them.
When it came to setting up the nursery, the opslagruimte proved to be a godsend. Guest beds and extra wardrobes were stored temporarily, so they could prepare the room for the arrival of their second child in peace. This not only freed up space at home but also brought a sense of calm and order.
A long-term solution
After the birth of their son Lars, the storage unit remained a convenient extension of their home. Items belonging to Emma that Lars wasn’t ready for—like her cot and toys—could be kept neatly. Now that Lars is a bit older, they’re even considering reorganising the unit once more.

It gave them the flexibility and financial breathing room to let their family grow without major risks or stressful choices. “Thanks to the storage unit, we’ve been able to make the most of our home and save a substantial expense,” Sophie says, pleased.
